LV systolic function

Quantitative assessment of systolic LV function:

  • Calculation of left ventricular ejection fraction, LV-EF by M-Mode by Teichholz. The disadvantage of this method is that it assumes a cylinder shape of the LV (normal > 55%)
  • Shortening Fraction: % changes in LV dimension from end-diastole to end-systole Formula: [(EDV – ESV) / EDV] x 100 = EF (%)(normal > 28%)
  • Assessment of LV volumen with the method of discs (modified Simpson’s method, biplane)

In presence of mitral regurgitation (MR), the rate of pressure rise in early systole (dP/dt max) may be used to evaluate global left ventricular contractility. Peak systolic annular velocity (S′ wave) measured at the level of the mitral annulus reflects left ventricular contractility (more information in next lessons)
