Palliative care in Pediatric Heart Failure and Heart Transplantation

Authors: Mohammed AlHaddad and Yaser Alali (Pediatric Heart Failure & Transplant Coordinators at KFSH&RC)

The goal of palliative care is to help patients live better by relieving symptoms and improving quality of life. Receiving palliative care doesn’t mean to stop heart failure treatment or the patient is in the end of the life.

Palliative care can provide emotional and spiritual support for the patients and their families, helps with making complex treatments decisions and can give assistance with practical issues, such as support services for caregivers and grief counseling.

PI Project in pediatric Heart Failure and Heart Transplant at KFSH&RC:

In order to ensure comprehensiveness of care and enhancement of patient and family satisfaction, a PI Project with multidisciplinary team in KFSH&RC was initiated to deliver palliative care for selected patients.

Candidates for Palliative Care are:

  1. High risk patients who are listed for Heart transplant, waiting a donor and they are sick (on Inotropic support, mechanical ventilation, ECMO ).
  2. Patients who have complication post pediatric heart transplant.

Role of Palliative Care Team:

  • The Palliative Care nurse follows up on selected patients offering psychological and emotional support to the patients and their families.
  • In collaboration with Social worker the team designs activities for pediatric heart transplant patients such as offering gifts like IPAD , laptops…
