Etiology of Heart Failure in pediatric age

Etiology of HF in pediatric age is completely diferent to adults, remember in fetal life the manifestation of fetal HF is as “hydrops fetalis“.

  • Neonatal period and infants: structural heart disease commonly leads to ventricular dysfunction and HF, Congenital abnormalities such as anomalous left coronary artery from the pulmonary artery (ALCAPA) has to be ruled out in infants with suddenly HF
  • Children: Dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) is the most common myopathic process leading to HF in children and the most common cause of acquired DCM in children is myocarditis. Other adquired causes are Rheumatic disease, Kawasaki diseases or HF caused by Arrhythmias.
